Salman Khalid

Due to the impact of the injury he received to his head, he sight was lost. Despair and uncertainty completely enveloped him during this period, though he managed to overcome this obstacle through his sheer will and self-determination, and the loss of sight proved not much of a challenge. According to his reflections about his early days when he lost his sight, he admitted that while he was devastated to lose his sight, what was even more disheartening for him was the fact that he could no longer be able to pursue his studies as he normally would.

Fortunately, his parents came through in this dark hour of Salman’s life and provided their son with full financial and moral support. He was later admitted to the school of visually impaired. This school employed the latest computer software specifically designed for people with such abnormalities, such as lack of hearing and blindness. Salman was able to fully utilize these softwares to its maximum potential.

He passed his matriculation examination with flying colors and was later admitted to Government College University, Lahore. During his stay at G.C.U, he completed his I.C.S, B.A and M.A (English) in succession. He’s currently engrossed in pursuing his Masters in Special Education, and at the same time performing his duties as the Lab Incharge designed for people with visual disabilities.
Keeping his own hardships and bitter experiences in mind, he’s also developing customized software designed specifically for these people, which would enable them to have an easier time dealing with computers. The software, also termed as “Assertive Technique”, was Salman’s contribution to the people who were suffering from these disorders and abnormalities to have more and better opportunities for continuing their education, so they would become productive members of the community. For this accomplishment of this purpose, he formed an organization with his peers namely “OVIC” (Organization for Visually Imposed Community). The organization helped train these visually imposed people in numerous ways about how to operate computers without any complications.

Salman further added that people, who would like to join this organization, would be better off by persuading by family members first towards the goals and objectives this organization wishes to achieve and accomplish in the long run. To do that, they would have to reestablish their psychological barriers and take on a positive stance on these issues so as to avoid hiding their deficiencies or disorders.

They must avail each and every opportunity through maximum exploitation of their talents and abilities and at the same time, keep this in mind that there’s purpose hidden in one’s existence. Salman further added, that if he were given the authority, the first thing he would do would be to address some of the most severe issues which these people encounter in their daily lives. To make things easier, he would create or rather establish a policy to take corrective actions for all the issues and problems that are pretty much prevalent in our society.

His parents, who were very pessimistic about their son’s future a few years back, are now filled with joy and pride that despite the impossible odds, their son overcame each and every obstacle life threw at him and made a name for himself and his family. It is their desire and wish that Salman continues to completing his double M.A and later on devote his time on pursuing a P.H.D degree as well, so that he would be better equipped and prepared for the journey he had begun by establishing this organization, the purpose of which is to empower people who are visually impaired and to make them more productive and efficient members of the community.

In the end, Salman asked us to deliver his message to all the people who share his symptoms that instead of taking self-pity on themselves, they should get a hold of themselves, become self-confident and ignite in their hearts the passion to move forward in light towards success and prosperity, utilizing their talents and competencies to their maximum potential, while at the same time, negate all other aspects of their disabilities.
